Cuba opens first luxury mall

In the heart of the capital of a nation founded on social equality ideals, the commercial arm has opened a conspicuous capitalist temple

Teenagers and young adults pose in front of shop windows to take selfies and post them on Facebook
"La Manzana" has five stories and since its inauguration it has become a sociocultural phenomenon
Only 1 out of 10 Cubans can afford to buy here, according to Rodolfo Hernández Torres, a 71 year-old retired mechanical-electronic engineer
"La Manzana" de Gómez Kempinski will be the first five stars hotel to open on the island and the important brands sold in the mall reinforce the idea of luxury
"It's a very exceptional place, nice," says 24-year-old Méndez. "It's something we haven't seen before."
Some Cubans see the new shopping center as evidence that the country knows it has to open to foreign wealth
Most Cubans lack the money to afford such luxury items
A Bulgari wristwatch costs USD$10,200
A Canon EOS camera costs USD$7,542
"It was a great letdown," comments Jeannie Goldstein, who works in Chicago and came for her first visit to Cuba. "I came here to get away from these things," she added. "This is a manifestation of American wealth and values."

“These are shops for millionaires. To attract tourism with money, that is development, capitalism.”
