The Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage at Yale University has just returned an archeological piece to Mexico, native to the La Mar region, in Chiapas.
The piece, an ancient Maya steale, was delivered to the Mexican consulate in New York , where it was remitted to the National Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) .
According to an SRE press release, the piece had been kept by an American collector since 1966 . In 2018, he requested that the Yale University be in charge of returning the piece to its home country.
Some research papers from the La Mar region in Chiapas account for the existence of the Maya steale since 1903 .
“Mexico and the U.S. have collaborated actively to recover and return cultural goods to their places of origin, following a Cooperation Treaty between the United Mexican States and the United States of America to Recover and Return Stolen Archeological, Historic, and Cultural Goods. The treaty was signed on July 17, 1970 ,” stated the chancellery.
