Yesterday, a young man died after falling into the Xochimilco canal . The tragedy prompted authorities to take actions and mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said that her administration will work for safer tourism in Xochimilco .

Through social media, Sheinbaum released a new set of rules for the touristic spot , which will be applied on October 1. The new rules will regulate the businesses inside and around Xochimilco , as well as regulate alcohol consumption .

The trajineras will now how to provide life vests for the users.

The new rules will also limit the amount of alcohol tourists are allowed to bring in to three beers per person, a 1-liter bottle, and the sale of micheladas in the canals will be canceled.

Everyone will have to wear a life vest and in case a user refuses to wear it, they will have to sign a letter. Furthermore, the boat owners and rowers will be trained and will be asked to carry our anti-doping tests.

On May 22, the Xochimilco mayor , José Acosta , announced he would send a proposal to regulate alcohol consumption in the boats to the local Congress .

Mexico City's Attorney General's Office

announced that it has launched an investigation after a 19-year-old man died after falling into the canal .
