Woman faces up to 10 years in prison after setting the Tepozteco national park on fire while recording a video for social media

The Federal Prosecutor for Environmental Protection ( PROFEPA ) announced it has taken legal action against the woman who set the Tepozteco national park on fire on May 20, while filming a video for social media.

Jennifer Viviana,

25, could be sentenced for up to 10 years behind prison or a large fine.

According to a released by the PROFEPA , the National Forestry Commission ( Conafor ) put the fire out on May 25 and visited the affected area along with the person allegedly responsible for the fire , in order to evaluate the damages.

According to inhabitants, the woman behind the fire is responsible for the fire, which she sparked while recording a video for social media: “She tried to juggle objects on fire but lost control.”

Although the investigation indicates that the wildlife wasn’t affected, the fire did damage 60 hectares of the national park .

In Mexico, causing damages to biodiversity is a federal crime.
