The Mexican Government estimated on Wednesday that, in the next few months, its United States counterpart may send around 50,000 migrants and asylum seekers following the migration agreement that was signed last Friday .
Though Alejandro Encinas , head of the Sub-secretariat for Human Rights and Migration at Mexico’s Ministry of Interior , said that the government did not have a specific figure, the number of migrants sent to Mexico will likely rise to around 50 thousand.
Encinas reminded that U.S. migration authorities had registered the entry of more than 150,000 people to their country in the month of May.
“Not all migrants are asylum seekers and we will have to asses their status. However, we do know that the number of migrants being sent back to Mexico through our northern border will be considerable,” he added.
Moreover, the statesman explained that Mexico had registered a much higher number of asylum requests than in previous years and could receive up to 80 thousand by the end of the year.
“We now have an estimate of 40 thousand asylum requests. However, the number may eventually double at the present rate,” he stressed.
Interior Minister Olga Sánchez Cordero
explained that Mexico would prepare a special plan based on the Marrakech Agreement to ensure a regular, safe, and organized migration process.
Last Tuesday, Encinas and Sánchez Cordero started working on a National Human Rights Program for 2019-2024 , which aims to build a national agenda with a gender and human rights perspective to tackle the main causes of social inequality.
“If we want to find a permanent solution to this issue, we cannot, nor we should, try to hide the truth, however harsh it may be. It is only by facing inequality, violence, misogyny, impunity, and corruption directly that we can create a plan that will lead us to a more just society,” she stated.
The stateswoman declared that “the painful human rights crisis in the country was inherited” from previous administrations.
