U.S. and Canada remove travel advisory for Playa del Carmen

Canada and the U.S. have lifted the ferry ban in Quintana Roo after Mexico's Government significantly increased security measures in the area

Given the measures introduced to reinforce security in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, the U.S. Department of State has canceled the travel advisory issued for their government employees traveling at this tourist hub in the core of the Riviera Maya.

On the official website of the Department, the U.S. Government informed that all three of Mexico's government levels have launched a series of new security procedures at tourist areas as a result of the events which took place in Playa del Carmen.

“There are no restrictions on U.S. government employees for travel in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas such as: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya,” states the official .

Similarly, Canada , country which had also previously issued a travel advisory for ferries in Quintana Roo, also updated its information to remove the information on the threat, stating that “cruise lines that are still operating have significantly increased security measures,” per the information on their .

Last February 21, explosive devices detonated inside a ferry of the company Barcos Caribe at a port in Playa del Carmen.

Mexico's Office of the Attorney General (PGR) stated that while the explosive devices were sophisticated and remote-detonated, they were not the work of organized crime or terrorist groups .

The Government of Quintana Roo requested additional funds to increase security measures at the ports and is working on installing surveillance cameras and security metal detectors.
