The 2018 General Election in Mexico will take place next July 1st. Each time there is an election, it's normal for citizens to have questions about the electoral process. This year, however, a robot created by the National Autonomous University of Mexico ( UNAM ) will have the answers to the voters' queries.
EMI
, as the robot was named, was created at the UNAM Mobile lab and has been designed to help voters become familiar with the candidates, their proposals, how much funds they have spent in their campaigns, preliminary poll results, and even, make a prediction on who will win the election, according to UNAM Global , the communications media of the University.
EMI works thanks to an artificial intelligence designed by César Cárdenas, Alexis Rodríguez, Vicente Guerra, Hugo Cruz, Liliana Torres, and the team coordinator, Alejandro García.
García Romero explained that EMI was trained for months so he could answer all possible questions about the election in Mexico. The questions are asked through the application Facebook Messenger . You can even talk with EMI while you're talking to other acquaintances through this social network.
Moreover, the bot will “calculate percentages” about the likelihood of votes for all presidential candidates and from those results, “obtain a prediction of the possible winner,” according to García Romero.
The team coordinator has also claimed EMI is a unique project , as there is “no other robot in the world working on predicting a presidential election.”
This technology has also been developed to get the elections closer to the younger generations. “We want millennials to be informed about the current electoral process,” stated the creators during their Facebook presentation. “EMI, like all robots, learns more the more people write to him,” the team pointed out.
Thus, the bot invites all users to pose him question ranging from the candidates and their personal data to the results of different polls.
