The UK and Mexico team up to fight climate change

The United Kingdom is the only country that has been able to lower gas emissions while maintaining a sustainable and inclusive economic growth

The United Kingdom launched a program called , in order to collaborate with other countries in the fight against climate change through the implementation of innovative policies to lower greenhouse gas emissions , as established in the Paris Agreement .

The UK government explains that the “ UK PACT ( Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions ) sits within the International Climate Finance Team (ICF) in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) . UK PACT aims to support a series of high-impact activities which will provide low-carbon related technical assistance to a number of ODA-eligible countries. Their goals are to:

1. Contribute to the reduction of the country’s emissions and poverty , by improving the capacity and capability of key institutions (public, private, and civil society)

2. Support demand-led technical assistance that prioritizes implementation and helps raise climate ambition , by addressing barriers, constraints, and areas of opportunity at different levels of government based on the country’s political and economic context and sectoral priorities.”

In fact, the United Kingdom is the country that has been able to lower gas emissions while maintaining a sustainable and inclusive economic growth .

Therefore, the UK PACT aims to help Mexico become more efficient in regards to sustainability and lowering gas emissions .

The UK PACT has 5 main axes:

1. Public Climate Change Policies

2. Mobility

3. Green Finances

4. Waste Management

5. Energy

But how are Mexico and the UK going to implement these initiatives ?

Several organizations, that went through a selection process, will be in charge of implementing public policies in Mexico . These organizations will collaborate with ministries, and federal and local authorities by providing counsel and technical support in order to lower greenhouse gas emissions , a key factor in the fight against climate change .

In this first stage, the UK will invest £2 million , and the companies that will collaborate with both governments are Fundación Pensar , Carbon Trust , Steer, MexiCO2 , Polea , Iniciativa Climática de México , and IDOM .

During the presentation of the UK PACT , speakers emphasized that when a government launches a fight against climate change, it will also fight poverty and provide new economic opportunities through sustainable projects in the long and short terms, including decarbonization , green financing , and Climate Change policies .

The UK, Mexico , and these organizations are working to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 22% in 2030 .
