This morning, the American manufacturer and retailer of outdoors wear Timberland LLC opened a new pop-up store at the Palacio de Hierro department store on Durango street, in the heart of Mexico City’s Roma neighborhood .
The store will be available for a month and a half and it is meant to promote the American company’s values regarding ecology.
The inaugural event was presided by the company’s sales and marketing director Sun Lee , who spoke about Timberland’s commitment to the environment and the company’s actions aimed at reducing waste production.
“We’ll have a calendar of events starting today. We will go to Huerto Roma Verde and plant some trees. The company will also offer some great workshops to learn how to plant organic vegetables for your home,” stated Sun Lee.
Huerto Roma Verde
is a space where citizens and social organizations generate socio-environmental projects for the benefit of the local community. People are invited to trade in recyclable materials, grow organic produce, and access an ecological marketplace that offers several sustainable products and services.
“Timberland’s vision is all about coming together to really make this world a better place. The company seeks to equip its customers and leave a positive impact on the planet, specially in the fashion industry since it is one of the industries that pollutes the most. We want to be that brand that really makes a difference ,” she added.
Though several companies in the fashion industry have chosen to go green in the past few years, Timbaland has 18 years of experience in environmental protection and corporate responsibility. Since 2001 , the company has planted 9.6 million trees and recycled more than 310 million PET bottles to use in their fabrics, and in 2009, it announced a policy agreement with Greenpeace to ensure the leather used in its boots and shoes did not contribute to deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest.
“Right now, about 70% of everything in this store has a recycled element in it,” stated the marketing director, who showed us a pair of boots made 100% out of recycled PET bottles. “By 2020, 100% of our materials will have recycled elements in them,” she commented.
With the hashtag #NatureNeedsHeroes , Timberland, in collaboration with the scooter-sharing company Grin , has scheduled a series of collective activities in March and April meant to promote social and environmental responsibility among the citizens of Mexico City.
The company will offer a workshop to learn to grow organic produce and make compost on March 31 and 7 and 21 April, from 9:00 AM to 11: AM.
Furthermore, there will be a boot personalization workshop on April 13, from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM, where a local artist will help attendants decorate Timberland’s classic yellow boots in a unique way.
