Student from Querétaro designs sustainable school orchard

A student of the Autonomous University of Querétaro has developed an alimentary sustainability project

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) , the implementation of school gardens is important to improve nutrition quality among students and their families in rural and urban areas of developing countries.

That is why Teresa Sarahí Gutiérrez González, a student of Management for Community Development in the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (FCPS) of the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) , has developed the project " Ecotechnics for alimentary sustainability ," which was carried out at the Bachilleres School, Ajuchitlán, Colón campus .

FAO believes that school gardens help in the production of healthy food and nutrition programs. In a statement, the UAQ reported that it had supported the project through the Fund for Special Projects of Stewardship (Foper) 2018 .

The main goal of her research, she explained, was the implementation of eco-techniques for the accessibility of fruits and vegetables. With the support of university brigades, they built a ferrocement cistern and a school garden, through which students will have access to fruits and vegetables, offering a food security solution for their community.

The trees planted, mainly guava, lemon, peach, pear, and apple were donated by the Ministry of Sustainable Development .

Shortly after the installation of the cistern and the vegetable garden, the growth of the trees will be monitored. The first fruits will take between six months and one year to grow. From this time on, fruit and vegetables will be used by students as well as the rest of the local community.
