, who represented Mexico at the beauty pageant this year, became the second runner up during the final after Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa was named Miss Universe 2019.
Sofía Aragón
is a 25-year-old writer who has committed her life to help others suffering from depression . She became a speaker when she realized that by sharing her story, she could help people to overcome the same struggles she experienced. She is passionate about the importance of mental and emotional health and will continue to fight for those who suffer from depression. She believes that compassion and understanding are the key to empowering people around the world. She will continue raising her voice and keep communicating a message of self-love and value.
Since Miss Universe was created 65 years ago, Mexico has only won the title twice. Lupita Jones became Miss World in 1991 and Ximena Navarrete won the title in 2010 .
After being selected as one of the 5 finalists, Sofía Aragón was asked about the recent protests registered in Latin America and all over the world. The Mexican beauty said that although she believes in protesting and raising your voice, she is not in favor of violence .
She also sent a message to little girls watching the show. Aragón said that “it is very important to teach little girls the importance of their value, we see a lot of perfection on social media , perfect lives, perfect bodies, perfect faces, perfect relationships, nothing is real. We should teach them they are wonderful and that they are worthy because of who they are, it's not about how they look but how they react before the world. I think a girl is worthy because of what she has to offer to the world, not because of the way they look.”
Miss México
also said that the beauty pageant is changing because it is not only looking for beautiful and perfect women but someone who is a leader : “the most important is to look for progress and not perfection.”
In recent years, beauty pageants such as Miss Universe have sparked criticism because of the way they portray women. Many argue that these contests objectify women and are not inclusive . For example, this year, Victoria's Secret announced it was canceling its annual fashion show but in contrast, Savage x Fenty , a lingerie line launched by singer Rihanna , has become wildly successful among customers because the runway show features models from all ethnicities and sizes . Savage has become a true example of what new generations want and expect.
Although Miss Universe still evaluates beauty and physical appearance , the contest has tried to include more social-political issues .
