Nine newborns contracted COVID-19 at the pediatric area of the “Dr. Aurelio Valdivieso” Civil Hospital in the city of Oaxaca , so they are receiving specialized care and a biosecurity protocol has been activated at the medical unit, as informed by Oaxaca’s Health Services (SSO).

Manuel Sánchez Sánchez, the doctor in charge of the hospital, explained that the children who are infected are four newborns, who are isolated in the nursing area, three at the COVID-19 area, and one more at the Intermediate Care area with isolation protocols. Moreover, there are other two suspicious cases under observation at the Pediatric Emergencies and the Obstetrics and Pediatrics areas.

The doctor said the patients have a stable clinical condition and they are “under permanent monitoring and with the implementation of biosecurity guidelines to protect both the users of the medical unit and healthcare workers.”

Women with high-risk pregnancies, who need emergency care, are immediately attended at the hospital.

“Women who have given birth at the General Hospital and who tested positive for COVID-19 have received proper medical care according to their case, following the health protocols,” said Sánchez Sánchez.

According to the SSO, no children or newborns have died of coronavirus in that hospital so far. “Since the beginning of the health emergency, medical management has been strictly done according to the official procedures and rules, complying with the proper epidemiological measures,” as asserted by the head of the hospital unit.

He stressed that the Pediatrics area is working normally and that “the hospital will keep reinforcing the health filters as well as the epidemiological surveillance to prevent infections.”

At first, the Civil Hospital, which is the most important one in Oaxaca’s capital, was not destined for the care of patients with coronavirus, but two months after the arrival of the epidemic at the Mexican state, last May, it became a COVID-19 hospital due to the saturation of other medical facilities.
