“ San Miguel de Allende has obtained, for the second year in a row, the award for best city in the world, and it is all thanks to each of its citizens,” stated the mayor Jesús Gonzalo González Rodríguez , upon receiving two medals at the " World's Best Awards 2018 ."
The mayor of San Miguel de Allende received the medals accompanied by the president of the Tourist Council of San Miguel, Francisco García Chávez, and its general director, Guillermo González Engelbrecht .
The ceremony was held in New York , where the editor in chief of Travel & Leisure magazine, Nathan Lump , presented the two awards to San Miguel de Allende for "The best city in the world" and "The best city of Mexico."
He indicated that Travel & Leisure is the prominent voice for the sophisticated traveler, offering expert options and engaging and inspirational lifestyle and travel content from anywhere in the world; with an audience of more than 15 million people and editions in the United States, India, Mexico, and Southeast Asia .
He said that the award given pays homage to the best destinations and tourism providers in the world, according to the votes that their readers make in a period of six months; As a result, the Rosewood Hotel and Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada received the award as No. 1 and No. 4 , respectively, for the "Best Hotel" category in the Mexican Republic.
Upon receiving the awards, Mayor Gonzalo González clarified that "without exception, each service provider, at all levels, is responsible for San Miguel de Allende to once again recognize itself as the best city in the world to visit. Thanks to your dedication, service, and vocation."
San Miguel de Allende is one of the three cities to win the best City of the World award in two consecutive years after Kyoto and Sydney ; becoming the only city in America to have this recognition.
On July 7, 2008 , the city was also named a Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO , under the title of fortified city, San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesus of Nazareno de Atotonilco . The distinction was granted due to its cultural and architectural contribution to the Mexican Baroque .
" The Heart of Mexico " is the identifier of San Miguel, not only because of its central location, but also because of its vast history and fervent interest in preserving Mexican traditions and culture.
The Mexican Independence Movement was coined in San Miguel de Allende and, during the 60s it became one of the main colonial destinations of the country, when visitors were attracted by its natural lighting, architecture, and vegetation.
San Miguel de Allende has more than 80 hotels , 2 of which belong to the luxury travel association " Virtuoso .”
