In the framework of the September 19 earthquake anniversary , the Barrio Unido association , composed of restaurant owners, neighbors, and civil society, have organized a series of gastronomical and cultural activities to commemorate the disastrous event.
“Barrio Unido emerged as a way to unite people against insecurity and delinquency, which have represented a problem for people living in the Roma, Condesa, Juárez, and Cuauhtémoc neighborhoods for a while now, particularly for the restaurant community. Following last year’s earthquake, the group has also helped to make our community stronger,” commented Ramón Orraca, businessman from the Grupo Bonito group and member of Barrio Unido.
One of the main activities to be held as part of the commemoration will be the Barrio dinner, which will take place tomorrow at the Lindbergh Forum forecourt in the Mexico Park at 19 hours , featuring tastings from some of the neighborhood’s most popular restaurants such as: Cancino, La Zaranda, and La Ventanita, from Grupo Archipiélago; Baltra Limantour, Can Can, and Bar Oriente, from Grupo Sicario; Bonito Pop Food , Fonda Fina, Pasillo de Humo , and Mexsi Bocu , from Grupo Bonito; Rosetta and Lardo, by Elena Reygadas; Máximo Bistro and Lalo, by Eduardo García; Nudo Negro, Merkavá, and Peltre, by Daniel Ovadía; Paprika and Sesame, by Josefina Santacruz, and many others.
In the official list of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants of 2017 made by S. Pellegrino , Rosetta ranked No. 35 while Máximo Bistrot ranked 39 , both of which will be participating at the tastings tomorrow night.
“There will be 19 little venues and each restaurant will serve different dishes . For a voluntary contribution (ranging from 0 to 300 pesos), attendants will be able to taste the work of some of the country’s top chefs such as Elena Reygadas and Lalo García ,” added Ramón.
At the same time, there will be a hike and bike tour coming out of Huerto Roma Verde , where a group of Concheros (pre-Hispanic dancers and sorcerers) will perform prayers and spiritual cleansing rituals throughout the neighborhood. The documentary “19S” by Alan González will be projected and there will be talks in which people will share their experiences and testimonies, along with a photo gallery .
