The pet food sector in Mexico reported a 12.4% growth during the first half of 2018 in the wholesale channel in Mexico, compared to the same period last year.
According to the readings of the indicator ISCAM (Systematized Information of Channels and Markets) , seven out of every 10 households have a pet, and the market trend in Mexico is for small breeds, which has driven the consumption of food in bulk.
The director of the Division of Groceries of ISCAM , Rolando Contreras , mentioned in a statement that one of the factors that encouraged market growth was the implementation of pet food dispensers in stores, which allowed for it to be sold by weight.
He pointed out that during the first six months of the year, sales of dog food grew 10.8% , while cat food sales increased by 19.7% in value , with regard to the same period of 2017 .
He said that, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , the pet food industry in Mexico has shown an exponential growth in the last decade, going from 16 production companies to 124 at the end of 2017.
It is important to remember that many pet food products include fish meals and the sardine industry in Mexico has also grown considerably in the last few years, at the expense of the marine ecosystem in Baja California.
