According to Article 300 of the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Proceedings, a restriction in the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages shall be established on election day .
However, each state defines the duration and types of restrictions applicable. Thus, the alcohol ban this weekend could last anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on where you live.
The law is applicable to all wine shops, supermarkets, grocery stores, markets on wheels, nightclubs, restaurants, county fairs , among others.
Nevertheless, local authorities have stated some tourist areas will be excluded from this measure.
The reason behind the ban is to avoid disturbing the peace and to ensure public safety on election day.

Penalties range from fines to shutting businesses down.
According to the Mayor of Mexico City, José Ramón Amieva, the alcohol ban in Mexico City will begin at 12:00 am on Sunday, July 1st and end at 11:59 pm.
