The wind farm was inaugurated by governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca and the Secretary of Energy, Pedro Joaquín Coldwell yesterday in Reynosa . With a 420 megawatts capacity , the farm could supply energy to more than 1 million 100 homes .

25 kilometers

away from Reynosa, the power installation will directly benefit 17 rural communities with a considerable economic spill. Its 123 state-of-the-art wind turbines make it the largest wind farm in Latin America , according to the general director of Suma Energy, Adrián Katsew .

Katsew stated that Zuma Energy would generate income through lease contracts with land owners for the next 40 years , pointing out that, out of all 92 beneficial contracts signed, 77 were made with rightsholders of communal lands .

“The main motivation for investment in the wind energy sector is wind wealth in the region. In the case of Tamaulipas, the wind comes from the Gulf of Mexico , which makes this a great opportunity for clean energy. I would say that Tamaulipas is spearheading this sector, providing the most wind energy in our country,” added the CEO.

At the Cultural Center , governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca reminded attendants of Reynosa’s bad reputation as an extremely windy city. “Who would think that the wind would bring us such great benefits. It will not only be ‘Windy Reynosa’ anymore, as people say. It will also be known as one of the most important clean energy generators in the country,” he commented.

“None of this would have been possible without the valuable support of landowners, farmers, and stockbreeders, as well as the owners of communal lands,” added the state governor.

He also announced plans to create a Wind Research Center in coordination with the Technological University of Tamaulipas (UTT) and the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT) , where technicians will be trained to operate the gigantic facility.

Furthermore, the Secretary of Energy, Pedro Joaquín Codwell , congratulated the governor for his promotion of energy development in Tamaulipas.

He commented that the development rate of wind power facilities in the country was growing, and that wind power capacity had tripled since the beginning of the present administration’s six-year term, reaching a total of 4,200 megawatts .

“Throughout the country, in places such as Tamaulipas, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the Baja California Peninsula, and the state of Yucatán , exceptional wind corridors are formed, favoring the installation of wind turbines,” the federal official stated.
