Tropical storm Nate

carved a devastation path in Central America being the third hurricane to hit the region in less than two months as part of an especially active hurricane season.

" Hurricane Nate had the potential to wreak havoc on Louisiana ," the State's Governor John Bel Edwards said in a statement Sunday, "but thankfully, we were largely spared major damage, " as there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

New Orleans

, ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, was largely spared, and Mayor Mitch Landrieu lifted a mandatory curfew after only an hour.

Hurricane Nate

left more than 100,000 people in the area without power as it made its landfall in Louisiana and Mississippi hours later.

The Miami based National Hurricane Center ( NHC ) said the storm had top winds of only 35 miles ( 55 kilometers ) per hour and was moving north-northeast at a speed of 24 miles per hour.

Authorities warned of a continuing threat of tornadoes as the storm tracks northward, yet the deteriorating storm is expected to bring mostly heavy rains .

However, Nate will go down in history as part of one of the most destructive hurricane seasons in years, along with Harvey , Irma , and Maria .

Later this week, Nate barreled up the eastern coast of Central America where it left sixteen people dead in Nicaragua , ten in Costa Rica , three in Honduras , and two people dead in El Salvador in addition to several people missing.

Hurricane season is expected to end by November .
