The Mexican Space Agency (AEM) announced the beginning of the international short film production competition "CineSpace 2019,” organized by NASA and the Houston Cinema Arts Society , seeking to promote the talent of Mexican filmmakers.

“NASA and the Houston Cinema Arts Society once again will offer filmmakers around the world a chance to share their works inspired by --and using-- actual NASA imagery through 'CineSpace,' a short-film competition,” according to NASA’s official website.

"The subject of cinema, which has been a matter of pride for our country in 2019, has also brought awards for Mexico in CineSpace’s 2018 and 2017 editions, in which the filmmakers Elena Franco and Alex Moreno won against almost 900 contestants from more than 50 countries," said AEM's General Director, Javier Mendieta Jiménez.

In a statement, the Space Agency stressed that the short film festival will distribute a sum of 26 thousand dollars among its winners.

NASA’s Images director at the International Space Station (ISS), Carlos Fontanot , stressed that it is overwhelming that Mexican youth have an innate talent for space, and recognized the regional leadership of the AEM to inspire their youth to reach for the stars as part of the country’s science and technology development.

In this regard, Mendieta recalled the collaboration of AEM with NASA and the EEI in " Space to Earth ," the first educational capsule of its kind in the history of Mexico.

All these activities, he stressed, contribute to the breakdown of mental barriers on the Mexican potential for space issues, including film, and added that the call for details and winning works of past editions are available at CineSpace’s .
