The Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMACC) has no budget for its activities, including the Ariel Awards , the most prestigious event of national cinema.
Apparently, the AMACC was not included in this year’s Federal Budget , and was not considered for delivery of budget resources in congress.
Now the Academy will have to apply to the call for cultural projects that federal authorities will offer this year, said the director of the AMACC, Ernesto Contreras .
“We agree that budget assignments should not be taken lightly, but the government must take into account the importance of our projects.
The Academy has 73 years of history
. It is not a group, but a national film community through which we uphold the quality of Mexican cinema. We are baffled by the fact that we were not considered for budget assignment as in previous years,” Contreras stressed.
Some of the most illustrious members of AMACC are Alejandro González Iñárritu and Gael García Bernal , both winners of Ariel awards.
“During the month of February , we will se how we can obtain the government resources we need,” said Contreras, the director of “Párpados azules” and “Las oscuras primaveras.”
The upcoming Ariel ceremony will take place halfway through the year, and “Roma,” by Alfonso Cuarón , will be nominated for several categories.
“The budget is usually allocated in the Chamber of Deputies , through the department of Culture. This comes as a surprise, but I am confident that we will receive the support we need, one way or another,” stated Contreras.
