Mexico reaches lowest unemployment rate in 11 years

While the informal labor market reached 57% in August 2017, slightly lower compared to the 57.8% reported in August 2016

In August, Mexico's unemployment rate reached 3.3% remaining among the lowest rates since May 2006, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography ( Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía abbreviated Inegi ).

While the underemployment rate , the employed population who has the need and availability to offer more working time, stood at 6.8% , slightly higher compared to the 6.4% reported a month earlier.

Regarding the informal labor market , the employed population who engage in productive activities that are not taxed or registered by the government, it reached 57% in August 2017 , slightly lower compared to the 57.8% reported in August 2016 .

However, the proportion of the population directly employed in the informal labor market reached 26.7% , a figure higher than the 26.5% recorded in July .

In August 2017, 58.8% of the population aged 15 and over was economically active , yet it is a lower figure than the one recorded in July when it stood at 59.1% .
