Last Friday, two burn victims from Guatemala were admitted at the Burns Unit of the National Rehabilitation Institute of Mexico's Ministry of Health after they were injured during the Fuego volcano eruption . It is expected other five patients in serious conditions are transferred during the weekend.
Mexico's Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Health informed the first two patients transferred had burns in over 40% of their bodies and that they will be receiving specialized attention at the Burns Unit.
“Air ambulance of Mexico's Ministry of the Navy arrives in Guatemala to transport the first two patients to be transferred to the National Rehabilitation Institute of Mexico's Ministry of Health,” reads the tweet of Mexico's Embassy in Guatemala.
The organizations in charge of the transfer were Mexico's Civil Protection Departmen t, the Mexican Agency for International Development and Cooperation ( AMEXCID ), and the Government of Guatemala through their Ministry of Health.
According to the Mexican Embassy in Guatemala, the first patients were transferred via an air ambulance of Mexico's Ministry of the Navy and Fernando Andrade Díaz Durán, Ambassador to Guatemala in Mexico, was there to receive them in Mexico City.
The Burns Unit ( CENIAQ ) has been attending burn victims throughout the Mexican Republic since 2011. The hospital has 12 isolation rooms restricted to medical staff only.
“Patients with second and third-degree burns are being transferred to Mexico City to be treated at specialized clinics. Mexico's Ministry of Health, in coordination with Guatemala's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, and the Minister's Office of Guatemala,” reads the tweet of Guatemala's Ministry of Health.
Mexico continues providing assistance through the mobilization of three mobile medical units headed for Escuintla to provide medical assistance to shelters located in the areas affected by the Fuego volcano.
