The government of Mexico proposed the U.S. the creation of a binational commission with the purpose of recovering the assets of the criminal group of drug-lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera , in order to use them to support citizens.
In the morning press conference, the chancellor Marcelo Ebrard detailed that yesterday, in the official visit, he presented Mike Pompeo , Secretary of State of the U.S. , the creation of the commission to settle the wealth of the drug-lord.
Ebrard said on social media that the meeting with Pompeo ended on good terms.
The chancellor said that there are several estimates of Guzmán Loera’s wealth, one of them reckons that it ranges between USD $12,000-15,000 million . However, the official amount is unknown .
He added that a great part of the cartels and their assets are in the U.S . and not in Mexico, since, among other points, the highest drug use happens in American territory.
“It would be difficult to allege that such a big business is located completely in Mexico; that is not true ,” he said.
He clarified that Mexico cannot return Guzmán Loera to the country , neither procedurally nor juridically
Marcelo Ebrard declared that the binational commission had the approval of the American Secretary of State.
