Mexico’s Interior Minister Olga Sánchez Cordero
warned that a new migrant caravan made up of around 20,000 people was forming in Central America . It has been called the “Mother of all caravans” and intelligence agencies are currently working to identify the people involved.
Following her participation at the 22nd National Juridic and Fiscal Consultation of evangelical Christian churches , the stateswoman mentioned that the Mexican government, in cooperation with U.S. authorities were working to identify criminal groups responsible for organizing the caravan.
“We understand that a new caravan is forming in Honduras, the so called ‘mother of all caravans,’ and that it could be made up of more than 20 thousand people,” she stated.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador
said on Thursday he was committed to helping curb illegal immigration after renewed Twitter criticism by U.S. counterpart Donald Trump , but he suggested it was an issue chiefly for the United States and Central America to address.
Illegal immigration across the U.S. border has caused persistent bilateral tensions ever since Trump launched his bid for the presidency almost four years ago, saying that Mexico was sending rapists and drug runners into the United States.
With initial campaigning for the 2020 U.S. presidential election already underway, Trump sent out a tweet early Thursday that again attacked Mexico over migration.
Trump again threatened to close the U.S. southern border.
At his regular morning news conference, López Obrador was asked about Trump’s tweet, and said he was focused on addressing the root causes of migration. He repeated that he wanted a cordial relationship with Trump.
Sánchez Cordero stressed the need to stop the irregular inflow of migrants, announcing that Mexico will now stop issuing humanitarian visas. Instead, it will issue visitor and work permits.
“We will not militarize our southern border, we will simply procure a safe and organized migration,” she stated.
