The federal government has now made official the cancellation of health insurance policies for major medical expenses from MetLife , one of the largest insurance firms that provided this service for government employees.
“We were notified on December 31 by the Ministry of Finance of the anticipated termination of insurance contracts for major medical expenses for government ministries, administrative bodies, federal entities and such. This means that, as of January 1, 2019 , insurance policies shall be terminated,” reads a message of MetLife addressed to their health-care providers.
As a consequence of the termination, the payment of medical services generated as of 2019 shall be covered by the insuree.
Through their press release, MetLife offered customized consultancy services to clarify doubts about the cancellation of the insurance service by the Mexican government.
The Ministry of Finance also notified their employees of the cancellation of health insurance policies, as have all federal government branches.
In this way, bureaucrats will have access to health insurance at the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) .
“Please be informed that the present administration has implemented a series of institutional measures to guarantee medical attention and the delivery of health services, with an emphasis on cases where workers or their family members are hospitalized and in need of continuing medical care,” stated the Ministry of Finance.
According to the public finance report, from January to September 2018 , the government paid MXN$2.28 billion for medical insurance. However, according to the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Service Users (Condusef) , the rising demand for medical care will have an impact of at least MXN$4.8 billion on the ISSSTE’s finances.
