Mexico announces free life insurance for healthcare workers on the COVID-19 frontline

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador

announced that healthcare workers that die because of the COVID-19 pandemic will receive life insurance worth MXN $50,000 from the that will be retroactive to April 1. The life insurance will cover some 1.6 million workers in that sector.

In his morning news conference, López Obrador, along with Finance Minister Arturo Herrera and Health Minister Jorge Alcocer, showed his gratitude for this aid and asserted that this is one of the many great shows of support from the Mexican society to medical personnel.

“We are very happy to be able to announce an act of solidarity from the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions . This is good news for Mexicans, as has been happening with many organizations, civil associations, and companies that are helping and showing their solidarity so we can face the coronavirus pandemic together.”

Companies and sectors whose activities are currently suspended are still paying their employees. And this news if of that kind, to help, to be united, in the benefit of others,” he said.

At the National Palace, Sofía Berlmar Berumen , president of the AMIS, added that the insurance will protect the frontline healthcare workers who die fighting COVID-19; it will be free and will cover 1.6 million workers.

She said that the insurance will not only cover doctors but also residents, nurses, interns, professional personnel, technicians, and mayors and will be worth MXN $50,000 ; the beneficiaries will be spouses, first, and in case there are none, it would be for children or parents.

The life insurance will be valid from April 1 to August 31 .

Belmar Berumen said that in order to receive the compensation , the beneficiaries will have to present a certificate from a public health institution that states that the worker was in charge of COVID-19 cases and tested positive to the new coronavirus, as well as a death certificate.
