Mexico: 50 bodies found inside mass grave

Last month, were discovered at a farm located outside the city of , in the state of . Now it has been confirmed that the remains belong to at least 50 people, Jalisco authorities reported.

State prosecutors

said the recovery work at the farm located in Tlajomulco de Zuñiga began on November 22 after the initial discovery and concluded on December 13, as experts determined there was no more evidence to be gathered from the scene.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Jalisco prosecutor's office said that there was a “preliminary” indication that the remains corresponded to 50 individuals .

Prosecutors said they have already identified 13 people; 12 male and one female , all of whom were previously reported as missing .

Jalisco's Forensic Sciences Institute

is working to determine the sex of the rest and cause of death .

Moreover, the investigation continues, with the aim of identifying more victims as well as “those responsible for this crime which gravely harms society,” the statement said.

The state is home to the , one of Mexico’s bloodiest and most violent drug cartels in Mexico.

In recent years, thousands of have been found all over Mexico and at least 40,000 people have disappeared since Mexico launched its war against drug trafficking in 2006.
