, from the FEMSA Biotechnology Center , along with Jorge Carrasco, ITESM graduate , have created a cream that can speed up the scarring process of diabetics.

“We wanted to develop a low-cost product that was effective and easy to use. We want to reach the bulk of the population, the base of the pyramid,” commented Jorge Carrasco, creator of , “a center of competence for scientific computing, providing infrastructures and services for high-performance computing.”

The product could improve the quality of life of people with diabetes and even save their lives. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography , diabetes is the second cause of death in Mexico.

Cuauhtémoc Licona conducted trials with patients at first quality hospitals in Oaxaca. The patients were made to use the product and the scientists assessed its effects on different types of wound.

The scar cream is now available in Oaxaca, with 300 prototypes created by Scicore Medical. They may be acquired through service centers. The company is looking to expand to other states, according to the scientist.

It took the team around two years to develop the product and it was thanks to FEMSA and the Biotechnology Director Héctor Cabrera that the project came to life.

“This product can speed up the scarring process by up to three times. This translates into an overall reduction of costs for the patient. Less healing means less medicine and less money spent on the treatment.”

The new treatment is expected to yield good results in people with mild to moderate wounds only.
