A group of Mexican students from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) has created toothpaste capsules that can be used without water.
The capsules are called Donty Tabs . They work by generating effervescence that expands cleaning particles as soon as the user introduces the capsule into their mouths and they come in contact with the tongue.
This cleaning system can reduce water use by up to 60% and diminishes cavities and gingivitis considerably.
According to the students from the Tec de Monterrey, Santa Fe campus , each time that a person washes their teeth while leaving the water tap on, around 250 milliliters of water are wasted per minute. Furthermore, many people in Mexico don’t have access to toothpaste or toothbrushes in the country.
“Dental health is a serious hygiene problem that is often overlooked in poor communities,” stated Sebastián González, one of the product inventors , in an interview with the ITESM.
The students decided to develop a product that was easy to use and did not require any other elements such as toothbrushes. “We wanted to facilitate its use to prevent any sort of dental problems such as cavities and infections,” he stated.
The toothpaste capsule does not contain fluorine, it is handcrafted, packaged, and distributed in glass containers, which makes it an entirely reusable and environment-friendly product.
The mouth capsules were developed through the TecLean platform from the Eugenio Garza Lagüera Entrepreneurship Institute .
