Mexican neurologists
have chosen to participate in the publication of articles on multiple sclerosis in the Wikipedia platform , so that readers may find useful and reliable information on the subject.
Wikipedia is the second most visited portal in Spanish on the web
, and Mexico is the country that makes the most inquiries, with approximately 289 million articles viewed each month . 38% of overall searches on the subject of mental health issues are conducted in this free online encyclopedia.
With aims to maintaining the contents on this platform relevant and garner the support of reliable organizations such as the Mexican Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (MEXCTRIMS) , the content update was conducted by professionals in the field.
At the first Multiple Sclerosis Editatona in Mexico, held on August 4 , a dozen neurologists collaborated in an exercise called " women working for women ," highlighting female power in health issues through the use of technology.
Claudia Muñoz, secretary of the Wikimedia Foundation in Mexico
, commented that Wikipedia is the largest free encyclopedia on the Internet and the largest collaborative project of humanity.
She explained that this was a collective and simultaneous edition event aiming to improve and create articles within the platform.
During the six-hour session , participating specialists led by Laura Ordoñez , president of MEXCTRIMS, reviewed and edited various contents related to multiple sclerosis, its main symptoms, epidemiology, etiology, as well as treatment alternatives.
"As health professionals, we want to make sure that the available information is accurate, up-to-date, and easy to understand for patients, caregivers, doctors, and the general public," Ordoñez said.
Veronica Rivas, assistant neurologist during the Editatona
, said that patients and caregivers are increasingly using the Internet to understand the illness and prepare for a diagnosis.
"This is something that we cannot avoid, however, there are many aspects of multiple sclerosis that remain unknown, with periods of stability and instability, so there may be a lot of information on the network that is not accurate or up-to-date," she said.
