Yesterday, the Federal Official Gazette (DOF) published a decree —effective as of today- for the creation of the Mexican Food Security Agency (Segalmex) , which will aim to promote agricultural productivity and food distribution for the benefit of lagged segments of the country’s population.

The institution will be decentralized and have its own legal personality. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) will be in charge of coordinating its activities.

The new agency’s main activities will be to acquire agricultural products for the benefit of agricultural workers, coordinate imports in case of food shortage, promote the production and commercialization of dairy products, and encourage the acquisition and sale of fertilizers.
