Mexican diver Adriana Jiménez
made history after winning the second medal of her career in the 2019 FINA World Championships , by winning silver in high diving.
Jiménez, who also won silver in the edition of 2017 , picked up silver after getting 297.90 points and was only 15 hundredths from the Australian Rhiannan Iffland , who won gold .
The medal of the Mexican is an iron fist in a velvet glove for the National Swimming Federation (FMN) , who had failed to recognize her before the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE).
“The Association of the State of Mexico has not complied with the paperwork for the affiliation of Adriana Jiménez,” mentioned the release of the FMN disregarding the now double World medalist .
The disregarding of Jiménez by the FMN happened after the diver reported the debts the CONADE had with the scholarships of her and some of her teammates. She was one of the first athletes to denounce the situation.
“The case of [Jiménez] is not an Olympic or official competition . It’s a competition of a brand that sponsors extreme sports,” said Ana Guevara , discrediting the diver’s statement and forgetting that the CONADE itself appointed her 2017 National Sports Award .
However, the former sprinter showed ignorance since high diving is so official that it is recognized by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) , the highest body that rules aquatic activities in the world.
The medal allowed Jiménez to become the only Mexican high diver to win two medals in world championships .
