, Carlos Camacho began his project of selling straws and biodegradable disposable trays made with corn starch . His project grew until he founded the Ecoshell company , which now has around 400 customers from restaurants and supermarkets .
The company's Sales Manager, Rosalba García , said that the objective of this initiative is to take care of the environment, since some plastics take thousands of years to degrade. Ecoshell seeks to introduce environment friendly products into the market.
In 2010 , Carlos Camacho had the vision of making biodegradable products such as compostable straws, cups for cold drinks, and other disposable products made from corn starch, he said in an interview with Notimex.
The products are made from biomass, which biodegrades in only 90 to 240 days without leaving toxic residues in the environment, thanks to the microorganisms that feed on the products and later reintegrate them back into nature.
In the framework of the Expo Café 2018 , Rosalba García stated that the business would continue to grow because awareness is growing on the issue of the environment, in addition to large companies’ interest in using this type of material.
“In fact, last year, our number of customers grew around 100 percent . We currently have between 300 and 400 buyers ,” she stated.
Though the product is more expensive than traditional disposables, it has gained acceptance in the market, adding customers such as the CMR restaurant operator and supermarkets such as Walmart, Superama, and Sam's .
