The sources to understand the life and beliefs of Pre-hispanic cultures are multiple and diverse, and many of them are not even in Mexico, thus Amoxcalli (“ Amox ” means book, “ Calli ” means house and together “ Amoxcalli ” means library or literally book house) was created to make codices available online.
In a statement, the Autonomous Metropolitan University ( UAM ) disclosed that Amoxcalli retrieves a series of codices that portray Pre-hispanic cultures of ancient Mexico, along with a dictionary of both glyphs and pictographs of the codices held in the Mexican Fund in Paris.
Luz María Mohar Betancourt
, researcher at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology ( CIESAS ), explained that in these documents there are recordings of what people conceived as relevant issues.
Mohar Betancourt announced that about 80 codices (images) were purchased from the Bibliothèque nationale de France ( National Library of France ) by Mexico's National Council of Science and Technology ( Conacyt ).
Additionally, more than 500 files were purchased in Latin characters, in Nahuatl and in Spanish , which were also digitized and belong to Amoxcalli website.
According to Betancourt the project was coordinated with the support of 60 colleagues from both national and international institutions throughout almost 10 years.
Tetlacuilolli
is a similar project that retrieves Mexican codices held in the British Museum .
