Lawmaker Mario Delgado
, Morena , said that former President Felipe Calderón sparked a wave of violence and crime because Calderón was part of a criminal organization and also said that he might have provided protection to a criminal group through his Security Minister Genaro García Luna , who is accused of taking bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel , once led by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán .
During a press conference, Mario Delgado said that “the size of the inertia of this violence and crime spiral that President Felipe Calderón unleashed and which remains until these days, and he did it because he was part of a criminal group , I mean in the end, if he provided protection to a criminal group through García Luna , then he was part of a criminal group because the result is that the country sunk into violence and that is something that hasn’t been reverted and President Peña followed the same strategy.”
Delgado went on to explain that the security strategy implemented by President López Obrador is completely different to the one used by Calderón and Peña Nieto and added that “that’s why we modified the Constitution , to create the National Guard , that’s why there's so much social investment destined to the youth , to agriculture , to create opportunities . Then that strategy is going to generate positive results , what we’re seen are the last breath of a system where there was complicity between the government and some criminal groups.”
The Mexican lawmaker added that Calderón started the war against crime to distract the attention of a “huge” electoral fraud . He said that Calderón “used to war as a distraction so that the country forgot that he stole the 2006 election , and that, well, that had a high price, especially now that it was revealed that they dedicated to protecting the Sinaloa Cartel .”
Mario Delgado
also mentioned that in the last 12 years, there have been thousands of deaths and missing persons , violence, and blood and that all of this was to benefit a criminal group.
Today, during his daily news conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said his government will not investigate former President Felipe Calderón after Genaro García Luna , his Security Minister , was arrested in the U.S. after being accused of accepting multi-million bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel .
When López Obrador was asked if Mexico would probe Calderón or whether he would leave the matter into the hands of U.S. authorities , the Mexican President said:
“There won’t be an investigation because it would create the perception we’re doing it for political purposes .”
The President also said the Attorney General’s Office would cooperate with U.S. authorities in the investigation against García Luna , who will be transferred to New York this week.
