A large number of candidates to lead the ruling Morena party makes clear the tremendous internal division of that political institute. A large number of political groups exist under the banner of new and old-minded leaders, some of whom were once part of those parties that today seek to defeat.
The poor performance of the federal government is a matter of internal analysis but also international around bad economic decisions such as the cancellation of the airport; the destruction of the renewable energy market, and the highly questionable policy of substituting civil power for military power in strategic areas. The recent corruption scandals that weigh on the family of the Mexican Head of State make it clear that things are not going well, and, despite all of this, AMLO maintains its acceptance rates and the people's liking: how is that?
A part of the answer to that question resides in the lack of options that citizens face. The vote for Andrés Manuel in 2018 was a vote of punishment against what it was one of the most corrupt and cynical governments in the history of Mexico . Peña Nieto’s government, with its white houses, its strange relations with Donald Trump and his son-in-law, its security scandals, the lack of transparency, and its ineptitude, ended up filling the glass of the patience of the Mexicans .
A good part of the citizens voted with the liver. Against all reason, they voted for the worst option available on the ballot and turned it into government; in a deficient government that has far exceeded the worst expectations that we had anticipated in this column. It was not an easy task, and they continue to achieve it every day.
Faced with such a catastrophic scenario, the difficult task of re-convincing citizens that the opposition is a better option should be easier. It should also be to expose the regimen's most painful mistakes that have led to more than 65,000 deaths. Or the absolute lack of results of a government that, based on draconian austerity measures , is becoming even more inefficient; that destroys sources of employment and fuels the need for more clientelistic programs.
Today Mexico should have a defined, structured opposition with an impeccably clear speech. Many things are being done wrong, and the person responsible is the President and his political party. However, a few days after officially starting the electoral process to renew the Chamber of Deputies and elect 15 governors entirely, the opposition has not the faintest idea what to do.
Political parties are an essential part of a democratic system. They are facing a populist and conservative leader, the reason why they need to be creative, intelligent but above all, firm opposition. With clear and forceful proposals and approaches, without half measures and hesitation in the face of acts of corruption. As long as this type of real opposition does not exist, as long as the actions of the political parties continue to be hesitant, AMLO and Morena will continue to feed on them because, for many, they continue to be "the least bad."
