Some buildings in Mexico ’s gigantic capital are now covered in beautiful artistic murals with environmental themes. The art pieces were made with a special paint that may help decontaminate Mexico City , one of the most polluted cities in the world.

The images of nature that now guard the walls of tall buildings in the city were painted with technology , which is a mineral, inorganic exterior paint with high breathability. The substance reduces air pollution and prevents airborne dust and dirt from attaching on the surfaces through a chemical process that is similar to photosynthesis in trees.

Three murals were made to cover the facade of different buildings in Mexico City as part the “Absolut Street Trees” project.

The muralists in charge of putting the project in place operated on a surface of 2 thousand square feet , an extension that is equivalent to 2 thousand square feet of green areas that can reduce an amount of pollution equivalent to that produced by 60 thousand cars in a single year .

Pernord Ricard’s brand director Ana Carolina Herrera

said on Wednesday that the campaign aims to promote art and environmental protection among Mexican youth.

“Pollution has become one of the main challenges Mexico City faces. Because of this, by bringing technology and art together, we have created a new and creative way of planting trees by making urban murals that contribute to the city’s visual richness as well as the oxygenation of the air,” she stated.

The murals will also feature themes such as liberty, equality, and social responsibility.

According to Herrera, the biotechnological paint has a useful life of 10 years.

The Absolut Street Trees project features the work of some world-renowned painters and artistic teams such as Boa Mistura , from Spain, who painted over a building in front of the Diana Cazadora roundabout on Reforma Avenue; Mexican artist Revost , known for combining oriental art with pre-Hispanic symbols, painted a mural that features serpents and eagles representing gender equality in the Roma neighborhood.

For his part, illustrator Seher Oner , stated that his work sought to address the subject of nature by conveying potent messages that could leave a long-lasting effect on viewers. His mural features a series of birds that serve as an analogy to portray different personality types. The artwork will be located at the junction of avenues Reforma and Insurgentes.
