The division of the Federal Police assigned to security and surveillance tasks in Morelia, Michoacán since November 2015, has withdrawn from the city this Monday morning.
The agency confirmed that the 128 agents deployed in the capital city of the western state will no longer be involved in security operations.
According to the Federal Police, the operations led by the federal agents, such as proximity operations – dismantle criminal groups, fight drug trafficking and fuel theft , and get closer to the community – intel operations, an environmental mission, and the Tourism Operation, will be handled from now on by the local Morelia Police Force and the State Police.
On November 5, 2015, the then-national commissioner of the Federal Police, Enrique Galindo, announced that an initial number of 300 agents would be deployed in Morelia to recover the tourist and economic activity of the area and protect its citizens from organized crime.
The agents deployed operated under a single command across 217 quarters and in joint partnership with local police across five.
