The family of Elba Esther Gordillo, a Mexican politician who was once leader of the 1.4-million-strong National Education Workers’ Union (SNTE) , and TV producer Pedro Torres are discussing the possibility of creating a political drama –in the style of House of Cards- to tell the story of Gordillo, who was recently released from prison. She had been arrested in 2013 on charges of embezzlement and organized crime .
The project is meant to be broadcast through streaming platforms such as Netflix or Amazon . In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL , Torres claimed to have read several books about the former union leader, though he intends to base his bio-series on personal interviews with the potential protagonist.
“I have thought of several moments in her life that would look very powerful on screen. Of course, we would have to ask for her consent and conduct personal interviews to get to know her point on view and personal opinion on several things that she has been accused of,” he said.
The producer explained that he had sought to approach the son-in-law of Gordillo Morales, Fernando González , shortly after the teacher announced her return to public life on August 20 .
“We met about a month ago at my request. He seemed very interested as he told me that he liked bio-series very much. I believe in the life of this character, who has become extremely important in Mexico’s political history. I would like to learn more about her ,” he stated in a phone interview.
“In this series, we will talk about former presidents, current SNTE leaders, and the private life of this controversial character ,” stated Torres, though he added that literary license would be taken.
