A group of Donald Trump's supporters , We Build the Wall , began the construction of the first “private” border wall in the Mexico-U.S. border last weekend.
The 800-meters-long steel fence was built in the U.S. border with Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua , since it is one of the most popular ports of entry among migrants , mainly from Central America.
According to the Washington Times : “ Kris Kobach , a former secretary of state in Kansas and an informal immigration adviser to President Trump , says the New Mexico project has the president’s blessing and says local Border Patrol agents are eager to have the assistance.
'We’re closing a gap that’s been a big headache for them,' said Mr. Kobach, who is general counsel for We Build the Wall .”
We Build the Wall
has raised over USD $22 million through its GoFundMe campaign .
The co-owner of the land where the private wall is being built, Jeff Allen , said: “This is Americans' way of saying, ' Congress , you're worthless, and we're fighting it. We're going to build (the wall) ourselves.”
Allen explained the project was being funded by We Build the Wall , a company launched by war veteran and triple amputee Brian Kolfage .
The company's advisory board is chaired by Steve Bannon , the far-right strategist, and former Trump advisor .
"This is not Europe. This is America. We protect our borders ," Allen told AFP.
Moreover, Allen denied the construction of the wall had anything to do with racism : "This is not about racism . This is about me protecting myself, and America having a secure border . If people want to immigrate , they should go to a port of entry and apply," he said.
