Guillermo del Toro's “Shape of Water” earned MXN$62.44 million during its opening weekend in Mexico.
A total of 1.07 million people across the Mexican Republic sat this weekend to see the award-winning film, according to data provided by the National Chamber of the Cinema Industry of Mexico (CANACINE).
“The fact people in my country liked it means the whole world to me,” said the Mexican filmmaker upon receiving the news of the reception of his film in his native country.
From his Twitter account, Guillermo del Toro shared this message:
The success of this film has outranked other films showing currently in Mexican cinemas, such as “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”, Hugh Jackman's “The Greatest Showman,” and “Insidious: The Last Key,” as well the animated film “Ferdinand”.
