COVID-19: Over 1,000 Mexicans have died from coronavirus in the U.S.

As of June 15, Mexico’s consular network in the United States has registered the death of 1,345 Mexicans in the U.S. during the COVID-19 health emergency.

The highest number of deaths has taken place in New York with 719 cases, followed by California with 155 , and Illinois with 140 .

Likewise, there are 385 registered cases of Mexicans infected with COVID-19 in the U.S. while there are 339 cases registered in the rest of the world.

In a news conference held on May 19 at the National Palace, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asserted that his government will do its best to support the millions of Mexican ex-pats living in the U.S. during the pandemic.

reported that 12 fellow citizens have died from the new disease in other countries besides the U.S.

The SRE also informed that, with the help of the Mexican Air Force and the National Migration Institute , over 14,640 Mexicans have been repatriated from all over the world.

Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry added in a statement that the Mexican consular network is performing different actions to address the needs of co-nationals during this health emergency .

It added that it is giving assistance – considering the current health measures – to Mexican people who have contracted the new coronavirus, as well as their families.

“The consular network has prepared and disseminated in social media the documents called ‘ Guides for local resources ,” that comprise official information about the resources and services (medical, legal, housing, banking, and food orientation, among others) provided by U.S. authorities and organizations for those affected by COVID-19. In many cases, Mexican people who are not legally in the U.S. can also have access to those resources,” it mentioned.

The Ministry said that fellow citizens receive help and guidance regarding the intervention with local authorities and companies for the benefit of Mexican people who are struggling due to the pandemic .

It asserted there is also guidance for voluntary repatriation to Mexico ; in addition, people are also informed about the available medical services for COVID-19 tests or treatment.

“In the case of those who pass away, consular support has been given for the transportation of the remains to national territory. In addition, there are actions in coordination with state health authorities to monitor the current health protocols for the transportation of people who died from COVID-19,” it said.

On a conference held on June 9 , Ebrard asserted that the consulates will gradually reopen according to local health measures. The SRE expects 50 consulates will reopen by the end of the current month.
