COVID-19: Mexico’s Amnesty Law could save thousands of lives

Amid the first outbreak in a Mexican and with the possibility of massive outbreaks in many others, where it would be almost impossible to stop the spread of the virus, the President has urged the Senate to approve the Amnesty Law.

According to experts, since the amnesty law would be a federal law, it would result in the release of 5% of inmates , a percentage that includes around 6,000 people who were jailed for being in possession of illegal substances , such as marijuana , for their personal consumption.

If the amnesty law is finally approved, it would be implemented in federal and a similar measure would have to be implemented in state prisons to benefit people charged with minor crimes and who are the majority of inmates.
