The Cannes Film Festival announced last week they will change the dates for their 71st edition, which is scheduled to take place from May 8 to May 19, 2018.

“The Festival is beginning a new period in its history,” said Pierre Lescure, President of the Film Festival.

“We intend to renew the principles of our organization while continuing to question the cinema of our age and remain present through its transformation,” he added.

The new dates would allow, according to the source, to “rebalance” the two weeks of the event and “bring new energy” to its development.

By starting on a Tuesday, the festival will now be able to hold an additional gala evening before the Festival weekend and organize previews of the opening film throughout France.

In a similar strategy, by announcing the awards on Saturday evening, the Festival hopes to “increase its prestige” and give the closing film “better exposure.”

Mexico has a marked presence in the Cannes Film Festival, as several actors and filmmakers are often asked to be members of the jury, like Diego Luna , or participate with films like "April's Daughter" by Michel Franco .

In this year's edition, several key figures of Mexican cinema attended the event, showcasing the importance this platform has for the industry of our country.

"García Bernal, Hayek, Luna, Iñárritu, Del Toro, Cuarón, and Lubezki walk the red carpet of the anniversary ceremony" of the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
