Mexico’s President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador
claimed that the cancellation of the New International Airport (NAIM) in Texcoco encompassed the interruption of yet another megaproject similar to the one that was implemented in the commercial district of Santa Fe, west of Mexico City . The project would have been made within the 1,483 acres that make up the Benito Juárez Airport .
Through a video recorded within his headquarters in the Roma neighborhood , López Obrador said that the construction of the Texcoco airport was part of a long-term business scheme. He stated that he had had the opportunity to see the first draft, which included the creation of a new Santa Fe within the 1,483 acres that make up the airport terminal.
“I understand why they may be upset, because now they will not be able to profit from that. Now I am allowed to say so. During the public consultation, I had to be impartial, but what was really at stake in the construction of the new airport of Texcoco was that investors wanted to take over the property of the current airport.”
The left-wing politician asked the opposition to remain calm
, adding that from now on, the country would be run by the people and not by corrupt politicians and businessmen.
“I ask you to remain calm. A change has already taken place in the country and I must inform you that I will not stand still and ignore the will of the citizens who want to put an end to corruption and impunity. I bet my soul that I will end corruption ,” he stated.
López Obrador added that contractors and investors involved in the Texcoco project would be attended in accordance with the law, guaranteeing their participation in the new Santa Lucía airport .
