Over 70 bodies out of the 444 that were kept by the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Science (IJCF) - 322 of which were stored in refrigerator trucks - have been fully identified, though the institution had not yet undertaken the search of their family members or corresponding authorities to begin the delivery and burial processes.
The bodies correspond to people who died of illnesses, suicide, and accidents , as well as people who lived on the street. Most of them carried some sort of identity document, though others arrived at the hospital fully identified and later died. Among the bodies, there were two foreigners and one child.
Last Monday night, the “ Por Amor a Ellxs ” group, made up of the missing persons’ family members and friends was given access to a list of 18 names , which they published on Facebook . Sources of IJCF authenticated said list and informed of an even longer list that includes almost 60 names .
Furthermore, it was reported that, starting September 21 , four groups of the missing persons’ families protested outside the institute’s facilities, requesting to see the bodies that were kept in trailer boxes. So far, only 29 people have been claimed by their families .
One of the people that have been identified is Jonathan Michelle Tafoya Rojas, a 7 year old boy who was left in the Guadalajara Civil Hospital in 2016 . His parents never returned to claim the body.
There were also two bodies that corresponded to American citizens Decker Jerry Wayne and Charles Marshal Vann , who lived on the shores of the Chapala Lake . They both died in 2016 and have not been claimed by their families either.
In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL , the current director of the Institute, Carlos Daniel Barba Rodríguez , acknowledged that there had been a lack of coordination between IJCF’s internal areas and law enforcement agencies to identify the bodies.
Ever since this “contingency” started developing at the Forensic Institute, the government of Jalisco appointed three groups to trace the families of the people that have been identified so far.
