17 people –including a minor- fell victim to methamphetamine intoxication
after ingesting chicken in the Nuevo Casas Grandes municipality , in the state of Chihuahua . Mexican authorities are currently investigating the rotisserie where the product was purchased.
The health alert was declared after 17 people were admitted at the region’s IMSS Hospital showing the same symptoms: Tremors, tachycardia, and insomnia . The patients tested positive for methamphetamine.
Alma Rosa Valles, head of the Fifth Health District
, commented that the first cases had been detected on Sunday night. The common factor was chicken ingestion at a street food stall
Those affected have received medical attention at local hospitals from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) , though a 57 year old woman who presented a brain hemorrhage had to be moved to a hospital in Ciudad Juárez .
The health jurisdiction informed that the chicken samples given by the patients’ family members were being analyzed to determine where responsibility lied in the case.
Furthermore, the rotisserie is undergoing a verification process in which authorities will determine how the chicken pieces became contaminated and, if need be, proceed legally against the business owners.
