The migration collapse that struck Mexico was allegedly caused by 144 thousand foreigners who arrived in the country earlier this year, according to Interior Minister Olga Sánchez Cordero .

In an interview following an event called “ Works for the National Human Rights Program 2019-2024 ,” the head of the Ministry of Interior indicated that the number of migrants entering Mexico had jumped sharply.

While an average of 30 to 40 thousand foreigners used to enter Mexico each year, making their way to the U.S., this year, more than 144 thousand people have arrived in the country seeking to cross the U.S. border.

In view of this situation, the Mexican government will now seek to increase efforts to regulate the flow of migrants through work visas.

“The National Migration Institute (INM) will not be cast aside and will work hand-in-hand with Marcelo Ebrard ’s special commission to reduce migration flows,” she added.

Mexico now has less than 40 days to reduce the flow of migrants making their way to the United States. If the country fails to do so, the U.S. could impose 5% tariffs on all Mexican goods.
