The United States Treasury Department
informed that the Mexican football player Rafael Márquez and the norteño singer Julión Álvarez are among the 22 people sanctioned for alleged links with drug dealing .
The Agency also communicated that 43 entities in Mexico were sanctioned, among them were a football club and a casino.
Márquez, 38 years old, is the captain of the Mexico national football team and has played in international clubs such as Barcelona, Mónaco, and New York Red Bulls . He currently plays with the Atlas football team.
In conjunction with authorities of the US and Mexico, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury Department identified Mexican Raúl Flores Hernández and the drug organization “Flores” as Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers in accordance with the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act .
Besides Flores and his organization, OFAC also designates 21 Mexicans and 42 companies in the country for supporting Flores' drug dealing activities.
“As a result of today's action, all assets of the individuals and entities designated that are under US jurisdiction or are in the control of US persons are frozen , and US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.”
According to Mexico's Attorney General’s Office (PGR), this Wednesday Rafael Márquez went to the ministerial authorities to testify voluntarily.
