The IAAF World Championships in Athletics was held in London, United Kingdom this year, and saw Mexican María “Lupita” González win silver in the 20km walk competition.
The gold medal was for China's Jiayu Yang with a time of 1:26:19, one second earlier than the Mexican athlete, who came in at 1:26:20.
The bronze medal went to Italian athlete Antonella Palmisano , with 1:26:36, followed by Brazil's Erica de Sena, who broke the South American record with a time of 1:26:59m, and Colombian Sandra Arenas, who beat her country's record with 1:28:10.
Former boxer Lupita González – who won silver at the Rio Olympics – and Antonella Palmisano dominated most of the race, setting the pace at 4:23 minutes per kilometer.
Olympic winner, Hong Liu from China, was absent from the Championship for the first time in six editions after she was banned from participating in competitions due to a positive doping test.
Undefeated after her victory at the Challenge of Ciudad Juárez in Mexico and the Pan American competition in Lima, Lupita was seeking the only medal she was missing from a high-profile competition, after conquering the title last year at the Team World Championship in Rome – after Liu's disqualification – and her Olympic medal in Rio.
Despite her staying ahead of other competitors for almost the entire race, Yang managed to get ahead of Lupita González during the sprint at the final stretch and crossed the line one second before González.
